Kelly Hemostatic Forceps

The Kelly hemostatic forceps is one of the most recognisable instruments in surgery, distinguished by its partial jaw serrations — horizontal grooves covering only the distal half of the jaw. This design allows secure clamping of vessels at the tip while the smooth proximal jaw minimises tissue crushing, making it ideal for clamping pedicles that will subsequently be ligated and divided.

Design Characteristics

The Kelly pattern features transverse serrations on the distal 50% of the jaw only. This partial serration profile reduces the overall tissue crush zone while still providing reliable hemostasis at the point of maximum clamping. Available in straight (surface work) and curved (deeper tissue planes) configurations.

Clinical Applications

  • Medium vessel clamping with reduced tissue crush
  • Pedicle clamping before ligation
  • Hysterectomy and gynaecological hemostasis
  • General abdominal surgery
  • Orthopaedic soft tissue hemostasis

Kelly vs Crile — Key Difference

The Kelly has serrations on the distal half only; the Crile has full-length serrations. Choose Kelly when tissue preservation proximal to the clamp is important.
