Maurice H. Cottle was a Chicago rhinologist active in the mid-twentieth century who developed many of the techniques and instruments used in modern septoplasty and rhinoplasty. His name attaches to a family of nasal surgical instruments — Cottle elevators, Cottle nasal speculums, Cottle dorsal scissors, and Cottle double-ended elevators. The Cottle elevator is used to elevate mucoperiosteal flaps during septoplasty — the working end is a small spatulate tip on a slim handle. Standard in ENT and rhinoplasty sets.
