The category includes hand-held single-blade retractors (Senn, Volkmann, Farabeuf), self-retaining frame retractors (Gelpi, Weitlaner, Balfour, Bookwalter), and specialty patterns for specific procedures (Judd-Masson for bladder, Doyen for ribs, Hibbs for spine, Richardson for abdomen). Hand-held variants are simple and robust; self-retaining frames free the assistant from holding pressure for prolonged periods. Material requirements vary: hand-held retractors are typically manufactured from AISI 304 austenitic stainless for corrosion resistance through repeated autoclave cycles; heavy orthopaedic frames use AISI 440 or 17-4 PH for the higher yield strength under retraction load.
