Hospital holloware — kidney dishes, dressing bowls, instrument trays, gallipots, and sterilization drums — is the category of stainless steel hospital equipment that facilities order repeatedly, yet rarely evaluate carefully. When a kidney dish fails (dents, rusts, or loses its form), it disrupts sterile field setup and wastes nursing time. Understanding what distinguishes quality holloware from budget alternatives comes down to a few specific factors that are easy to check before purchasing.
Kidney Dishes (Receiver Dishes) — Complete Buying Guide
Kidney dishes are the most ordered single item in hospital holloware procurement. They are used for instrument holding at the sterile field, wound irrigation, suction catch, and general-purpose fluid collection during procedures.
Standard Sizes
- Small: 175 mm x 95 mm — bedside procedures, minor wound care, suture tray complement; the most ordered size
- Medium: 225 mm x 115 mm — general surgical procedures, dressing trays, instrument collection
- Large: 275 mm x 140 mm — major surgical cases requiring large wound irrigation volumes or multiple instrument collection points
- Extra-large: 310 mm x 155 mm — specialty use in trauma and orthopedic surgery where irrigation volumes are high
What Determines Quality in a Kidney Dish
Three manufacturing factors separate quality holloware from budget products:
- Steel gauge (thickness) — quality kidney dishes are manufactured from 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm stainless steel sheet. Budget dishes at 0.5 to 0.6 mm deform with repeated autoclaving and stacking under load, which creates gaps between stacked dishes that trap moisture and contamination. Fizza Surgical kidney dishes are 0.9 mm gauge across all sizes.
- Steel alloy: 316L vs 304 — 316L contains 2 to 3% molybdenum compared to 304, which makes it significantly more resistant to pitting corrosion from chlorine-based disinfectants and sterilization chemicals. Hospital holloware in regular disinfectant contact should be 316L. Dishes marketed simply as “stainless steel” without an alloy specification are typically 304 or lower-grade material.
- Weld quality — dishes with visible weld seams on the interior are harder to clean and can harbor residue. Quality dishes are either drawn (seamless, formed from a single sheet) or have exterior welds only with a fully smooth interior.
Dressing Trays and Instrument Trays
Rectangular stainless steel dressing trays are used for sterile instrument presentation, wound care, and procedure setup. Standard sizes from 200 mm x 100 mm (minor procedure) to 400 mm x 200 mm (surgical tray). Key specifications: 316L steel, 0.9 to 1.2 mm gauge, smooth pressed edges without sharp corners that can cut gloves during tray handling.
Gallipots and Bowls
Gallipots (small bowl containers) are used for antiseptic fluids, saline, and small specimen collection. Available in 30 mL, 60 mL, 90 mL, and 120 mL capacities. Dressing bowls range from 150 mL to 1,000 mL. All should have rolled, bead-finished rims — sharp rims lacerate gloves and create wound infection risk if the rim contacts the surgical field.
Sterilization Drums (Cheatle Drums)
Sterilization drums are used for steam sterilization of dressings, gauze, and small instruments in hospitals and clinics that use drum-based rather than pouch sterilization. They are available in perforated and non-perforated designs:
- Perforated drums — used in autoclave sterilization; side ports allow steam penetration and drainage
- Non-perforated drums (storage drums) — for transport and storage of sterile contents after autoclaving; ports are closed manually after sterilization
Procurement Checklist for Hospital Holloware
Before ordering holloware in volume, confirm:
- Steel alloy grade (316L preferred over 304 for disinfectant exposure)
- Sheet gauge (minimum 0.9 mm for kidney dishes)
- Interior finish (seamless or exterior weld only)
- Rim finish (rolled bead, no sharp edges)
- ISO 13485 certification of the manufacturer
Fizza Surgical has supplied hospital holloware to government hospitals, military medical corps, and private surgical centers across Pakistan, the Gulf, and East Africa since 1980. All holloware is manufactured in 316L stainless steel under ISO 13485:2016 with CE marking. Contact us for complete holloware catalog access, volume pricing, or to place a sample order.
