What Is Tungsten Carbide?

Tungsten carbide (WC) is a chemical compound of tungsten and carbon. It is one of the hardest materials used in manufacturing — with a Vickers hardness of 1,500–2,500 HV, compared to 200–300 HV for surgical-grade stainless steel. This extreme hardness makes tungsten carbide ideal for jaw inserts on needle holders and scissors, where cutting or gripping performance must be maintained over thousands of uses.

TC Needle Holders — What They Do Better

In a standard stainless steel needle holder, the jaw serrations gradually flatten and lose their grip on suture needles over hundreds of uses — particularly with fine needles (3-0 and finer). A TC needle holder has a small tungsten carbide insert bonded to each jaw face. These inserts:

• Maintain crisp needle grip after 5–10× more uses than standard stainless jaws

• Feel: TC jaws have a distinctive texture different from serrated stainless — a fine, cross-hatched pattern on the insert surface

TC Instrument Care

TC instruments require the same care as standard surgical instruments, with one additional precaution: avoid dropping TC instruments or banging them against metal surfaces.
