Where Allis grips with teeth, Babcock atraumatic tissue forceps grip with a fenestrated cupped jaw that surrounds delicate structures without piercing. William Wayne Babcock at Temple University developed the pattern specifically for grasping bowel, fallopian tubes, and hollow viscera that would tear under toothed instruments. The broad cupped tips spread pressure over a larger area: tissue is held but not crushed. Modern bowel surgery, gynecology, and vascular procedures all use Babcock when atraumatic handling is essential. Lengths of 16 cm, 20 cm, and 25 cm are standard; longer variants are required in laparotomy for deep abdominal cavity access. Always paired with Allis in general-surgery trays — different jobs, complementary instruments.
