Cusco Side-Screw Speculum — Medium 85 × 35 mm
The medium 85 × 35 mm Cusco fits the parous adult vagina — open enough to bring the cervix forward without overstretching the lateral fornices that produce the post-exam ache patients remember. Width 35 mm matches the lower-third diameter of a multipara who has had one or two vaginal deliveries; length 85 mm reaches the cervix in an anteverted or mildly retroverted uterus without forcing the operator to angle the handle against the pubic symphysis.
The clinical fit
This size is the workhorse of routine gynae-OPD: cervical screening, contraceptive counselling with bimanual confirmation, postnatal six-week check, discharge culture, and uncomplicated colposcopy where a low-acid-test view of the squamo-columnar junction is needed. The blade taper is gentler than the small (virgin) size, which avoids the corner-pinch experienced by the patient when the speculum is rotated 90° to inspect the fornices.
Side-screw locking
Cusco’s original lateral-screw mechanism — a single thumb-turn at the proximal hinge — converts the speculum from passive bivalve into a fixed retractor, so the operator can release the handle to pass a cytology brush or endocervical curette without the blades drifting closed.
