Joseph Nasal Knife — Long Straight Variant

The long-bladed Joseph straight knife addresses the cartilaginous-dorsal incision that follows the bony osteotomies — the cut along the upper lateral cartilages where they meet the dorsal septum, made to release the cartilaginous component of the dorsal hump after the bone has been mobilised. The longer blade reaches from the rhinion to the supratip in a single stroke, producing a continuous cut that the dorsum subsequently reduces along.

The dorsal-cartilage cut

A discontinuous cut produces an irregular dorsal line that is palpable through thin skin years after healing; the single-stroke cut of the long Joseph knife gives the smooth dorsum the patient was promised. The blade is angled so the operator follows the natural curve of the cartilaginous dorsum rather than fighting it.

Pairing

Used immediately after the bony osteotomies and immediately before the cartilage shaving with the Joseph rasp. The sequence is bone → cartilage → finish — each step demands its own Joseph-family instrument.
