Mauder Mouth Gag — Side-Lever Single-Hand Pattern

The Mauder mouth gag is the side-lever variant designed for single-handed positioning — the lever-opening mechanism sits on one side of the patient’s face so the anaesthetist can adjust the aperture without crossing hands with the operator. The Mauder is particularly suited to single-anaesthetist single-surgeon teams in resource-limited settings where a dedicated dental assistant cannot be assumed.

The single-hand opening rationale

Older mouth-gag designs require two-handed adjustment — one hand on each side of the patient’s face — which interrupts the surgical workflow when the aperture needs adjustment during the operation. The Mauder side-lever lets the anaesthetist reach over the patient’s head and adjust the aperture with one hand while monitoring the airway with the other. The advantage is real in long operations where multiple aperture adjustments are needed.

Where this is the right gag

Field-hospital tonsillectomy, mass-surgical-camp paediatric ENT, and outpatient minor-procedure suites where the supporting personnel are minimal. In the fully-staffed urban operating room the Jennings is usually preferred; the Mauder fills the resource-constrained niche.
