Metzenbaum Scissors 180mm (18cm) Curved Sharp/Sharp – Dissecting Scissors
Developed by Dr. Myron Firth Metzenbaum (1876–1944), a Cleveland otolaryngologist, these scissors feature the distinctive high shank-to-blade ratio that delivers maximum mechanical advantage during tissue dissection. They remain the most widely used dissecting scissors in surgery worldwide. This 180mm (18cm) curved variant with Sharp/Sharp tips is forged from AISI 420 martensitic German-grade Stainless Steel, hardened to 54–56 HRC.
The high shank-to-blade length ratio concentrates cutting force at the blade tips while keeping the surgeon’s hands well clear of the operative field. This mechanical advantage, combined with precision-ground blade edges, enables controlled dissection of areolar tissue, fascial planes, and peritoneal layers with minimal collateral damage to adjacent structures.
