Modified USA Narrow 15.5cm — NOTES-Adjacent Surgery
The 15.5cm-labelled Modified USA Narrow dressing forceps serves natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) and the NOTES-adjacent hybrid procedures that approach the abdominal cavity through natural orifices (oral, transvaginal, transanal) combined with limited transabdominal access. NOTES remains an experimental technique but the conversion-tray instruments including the 15.5cm Modified USA Narrow support the hybrid-procedure variants that are entering clinical practice.
The NOTES concept
NOTES was proposed in 2004 as the next frontier beyond laparoscopic surgery — entering the abdominal cavity through the stomach, vagina, rectum, or oesophagus to perform procedures without any skin incision. The technique has proven more difficult than initially anticipated and has remained largely experimental, with the transvaginal approach gaining the most traction for gynaecologically-appropriate procedures.
The transvaginal cholecystectomy
Transvaginal cholecystectomy (a NOTES procedure) has been performed in selected patients with documented outcomes equivalent to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The 15.5cm Modified USA Narrow forceps lives in the conversion-tray inventory for these procedures.
