Modified USA Narrow 155mm — SILS Colectomy
The 155mm Modified USA Narrow dressing forceps serves single-port laparoscopic colectomy — the colon-resection procedure adapted to single-incision technique through a transumbilical or right-sided incision. SILS colectomy is more technically demanding than standard laparoscopic colectomy because the single-port restricts triangulation; specialised instrumentation including the narrow-profile Modified USA dressing forceps mitigates this constraint.
The triangulation problem in SILS
Standard laparoscopic surgery uses three or four ports placed in a triangulated pattern, allowing instruments to approach the operative field from different angles. SILS technique constrains all instruments through a single port, eliminating triangulation. The narrow-profile instruments (including the 155mm Modified USA Narrow forceps) reduce the inter-instrument conflict at the port site, partially compensating for the lost triangulation.
The SILS-colectomy adoption
SILS colectomy represents a small fraction of laparoscopic colectomy volume; standard laparoscopic technique remains dominant. The 155mm Modified USA Narrow forceps’s role is in the SILS-converted-to-open conversion tray and at the academic centres with active SILS colorectal programmes.
