Modified USA Dressing Forceps — 250mm American Aortic Surgery
The 250mm Modified USA dressing forceps serves American aortic surgery — the open thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic procedures performed at specialised aortic centres. American aortic-surgery practice has refined the operations originally pioneered by Stanley Crawford and Hazim Safi at Baylor and Texas-Houston; the 25cm Modified USA fits these technique traditions.
The Crawford-Safi technique heritage
Stanley Crawford (1922-1992) and Hazim Safi developed the systematic surgical approach to thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms at the Texas Heart Institute and the University of Texas-Houston respectively. Their published classifications (Crawford types I-IV) and technique refinements (left heart bypass, cerebrospinal fluid drainage, motor-evoked potential monitoring) define modern open TAAA surgery. The 25cm Modified USA forceps populates the trays at the surviving open TAAA centres.
Modern open-aortic-surgery centres
Approximately 20-30 American centres maintain active open TAAA programmes, with the remainder having transitioned predominantly to endovascular technique. The 25cm Modified USA serves these specialised programmes’ tray inventory.
