The Olsen-Hegar needle holder is a surgeon’s compromise: combining the firm grip of a Mayo-Hegar with built-in suture-cutting scissors at the same instrument, saving one tray reach during continuous suturing. The trade-off is the risk of accidentally cutting suture when the surgeon means only to grasp the needle. Trained operators value the speed; trainees should learn Mayo-Hegar first. Olsen-Hegar is most commonly used in office procedures, minor surgery, veterinary practice, and dental closure where rapid suturing without instrument changes matters.
