Shumacher Umbilical Scissors — Obstetric Umbilical Cord Cutting
The Shumacher Umbilical Scissors are purpose-designed obstetric instruments for the safe and efficient cutting of the umbilical cord following delivery. The Shumacher pattern features short, robust blades with blunt/blunt tips that cut cleanly through the Wharton’s jelly and umbilical vessels (two arteries and one vein) while minimizing the risk of injury to the newborn. The blade geometry is specifically engineered for the unique tissue characteristics of the umbilical cord — a gelatinous, highly vascular structure approximately 1–2cm in diameter.
Manufactured from AISI 420 martensitic German-grade Stainless Steel, the blades are approximately 25–30mm in length with beveled cutting edges that slice through the cord in a single, clean motion. Overall length is typically 16cm (6.25 inches). The blunt tips prevent accidental puncture of the newborn’s skin during cord clamping and cutting. The robust construction ensures these scissors maintain their cutting performance through hundreds of sterilization cycles in busy labor and delivery departments.
