Standard Curved Dressing Forceps — 14.5cm Mastoid Surgery Angled Access
The 14.5cm-labelled standard curved dressing forceps serves angled-access mastoid surgery — used during cortical mastoidectomy and the modified-radical mastoidectomy procedures that treat chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma. The curved tip handles tissue at the angles the mastoid-bone curvature produces — the antrum is rarely directly opposite the operator’s straight-line viewing axis.
The mastoidectomy approach angles
Modern mastoidectomy uses the retroauricular approach with anterior reflection of the auricle — the surgeon works from the post-auricular position toward the antrum medially and the facial recess anteriorly. The curved 14.5cm forceps reaches both the antrum and the facial-recess soft-tissue planes at the operating-microscope-compatible angles these structures present. The straight forceps requires the operator to angle the microscope, which is sometimes impractical mid-procedure.
The cm-convention
North American otology training uses cm-labelling throughout; the cm-labelled SKU matches that convention. The 145mm-labelled equivalent (DF 03-20-04) serves European otology markets under the post-auricular parotid context above.
