Strully Dura Scissors — Probe-Tipped Neurosurgical Dura Mater Incision
The Strully Dura Scissors are specialized neurosurgical instruments featuring a distinctive probe-tipped (rounded, ball-tip) lower blade that safely slides between the dura mater and the underlying arachnoid membrane without perforating the delicate neural tissue beneath. Named after Dr. Karl J. Strully, a neurosurgeon who recognized the need for an instrument that could incise the tough dura while protecting the brain surface, these scissors have become a neurosurgical standard for dural opening during craniotomy procedures.
Manufactured from AISI 420 martensitic German-grade Stainless Steel, the Strully Dura Scissors typically measure 20cm (8 inches) overall with blades approximately 25–30mm in length. The probe tip on the lower blade is approximately 1.5mm in diameter — large enough to separate the dura from the arachnoid by gentle dissection, yet small enough to pass through a small initial durotomy nick. The upper blade carries the sharp cutting edge. This design allows the neurosurgeon to make a controlled, linear incision through the dura along the planned craniotomy exposure without risking cortical laceration.
Key Features
- Premium Material: AISI 420 martensitic German-grade Stainless Steel with precision-ground cutting edge
- Probe-Tipped Lower Blade: 1.5mm ball tip slides safely between dura and arachnoid
- Sharp Upper Blade: Precision cutting edge for controlled dural incision
- 20cm Overall Length: Standard neurosurgical working length for craniotomy access
- Protective Design: Prevents inadvertent cortical laceration during durotomy
Clinical Applications
- Craniotomy durotomy — controlled dura mater incision with brain protection
- Spinal dural opening during laminectomy and spinal tumor surgery
- Subdural hematoma evacuation — dural opening for clot drainage
- Posterior fossa surgery — dural incision over cerebellum and brainstem
- Dural repair and graft placement — trimming dural edges for watertight closure
