Size #00 Macintosh — Neonatal Curved Blade
The size-#00 Macintosh fiber-optic blade is the neonatal-and-premature-infant intubation blade. Sir Robert Macintosh (1897-1989), Oxford’s first Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetics, designed the curved-blade-with-vallecular-tip in 1943 to indirectly lift the epiglottis via tension on the glosso-epiglottic ligament. The #00 size is reserved for neonates under 2.5 kg and premature infants in NICU intubation. Vallecular-tip placement spares the relatively-floppy epiglottis from direct manipulation.
