Dean Cartilage Scissors – 17 cm Curved Scissors for Nasal and Auricular Cartilage Surgery

The Dean Cartilage Scissors are a specialized ENT and plastic surgery instrument measuring 17 cm in overall length with curved, heavy blades designed for precise cartilage transection. These scissors feature a slightly shorter and more delicate profile than the Boettcher pattern, making them particularly suited for detailed cartilage sculpting in rhinoplasty and otoplasty where fine control takes precedence over raw cutting force. The curved blade design follows the natural curvature of nasal and auricular cartilage structures, enabling smooth, guided cuts along predetermined cartilage scoring lines.

The blade tips are configured in a blunt/blunt pattern that protects the underlying perichondrium and mucosa during cartilage excision. The blade length of approximately 25–30 mm provides an effective cutting surface for trimming septal cartilage grafts, scoring antihelical folds, and shaping alar cartilage during tip rhinoplasty. The box-lock joint is precision-fitted to eliminate lateral blade play, which is critical when cutting resilient cartilage that can deflect loosely fitted blades and produce irregular cut edges.

Key Features

  • AISI 420 Martensitic German Stainless Steel: Heat-treated to 56–58 HRC for superior edge retention when cutting through dense hyaline and elastic cartilage.
  • 17 cm Overall Length: Compact size provides maximum tactile feedback and control for precise cartilage sculpting in rhinoplasty and otoplasty.
  • Curved Heavy Blades: Blade curvature follows nasal and auricular cartilage contours for smooth, anatomically guided cartilage transection.
  • Blunt/Blunt Tip Configuration: Rounded tips protect perichondrium and nasal mucosa from injury during subperichondrial cartilage dissection.
  • Precision Box-Lock Joint: Zero-play joint mechanism ensures blade apposition consistency for clean cartilage edges without tearing or fragmentation.

Clinical Applications

  • Septoplasty: Excision and trimming of deviated quadrangular cartilage and cartilaginous spurs obstructing the nasal airway.
  • Tip Rhinoplasty: Shaping and trimming lower lateral (alar) cartilages for tip refinement, deprojection, or rotation.
  • Cartilage Graft Preparation: Precision trimming of harvested septal, conchal, or rib cartilage grafts to exact dimensions for dorsal onlay or spreader grafts.
  • Otoplasty Cartilage Scoring: Controlled scoring of antihelical cartilage to create the antihelical fold in prominent ear correction (Mustardé technique).
  • Nasal Valve Repair: Trimming spreader grafts and butterfly grafts for internal and external nasal valve reconstruction.
