McCoy Flexible Tip Fiber Optic Blade 1 (Ref DI-105-01) — Size 1 paediatric/small-adult laryngoscope blade, 92mm × 71mm working dimensions. The McCoy lever-controlled flexible-tip mechanism provides up to 90° of distal tip articulation, improving epiglottis manipulation in difficult intubations.
The McCoy flexible-tip blade was developed by Dr W.J. McCoy in 1993 as a modification of the standard Macintosh curved blade. Where the Macintosh relies on the surgeon’s wrist angle alone to manipulate the epiglottis, the McCoy adds a lever on the handle that flexes the distal 25mm of the blade tip through 90°, allowing real-time epiglottis elevation without altering the overall blade angle. The flexible tip has become the standard rescue blade for difficult intubations where standard Macintosh patterns fail to expose the cords.

The laryngoscope blade and handle are the airway clinician’s primary intubation tools. Two blade families dominate: the Macintosh (curved, indirect epiglottis elevation) and the Miller (straight, direct epiglottis lift). Size 0 covers neonatal intubation; sizes 1 and 2 paediatric; sizes 3 and 4 adult. Conventional bulb-illumination blades remain in use in some settings; fiber-optic blades have largely replaced them in operating theatres for the brighter, glare-free light at the tip. Handles come in small (paediatric) and large (adult) variants and must mate with the chosen blade family. Manufacturing demands tight tolerance on the blade hinge and the bulb/fiber connection. Fizza supplies complete intubation sets in stainless steel with optional fiber-optic upgrades.
