Graves Speculum — Medium 95 × 35 mm
The 95 × 35 mm Graves is the speculum the gynaecology trainee learns to call “the normal one”. It is calibrated to the parous-adult median: 95 mm length to reach the cervix in a uterus of axial-to-mildly-retroverted lie, and 35 mm distal width to take advantage of the Graves flare that lifts the lateral fornices clear of the cervix. This is the size that fits the routine antenatal speculum check at term, the postnatal six-week visit, contraceptive counselling, and the working examination on a colposcopy clinic.
Why this is the default size
Outcomes data from cervical screening programmes correlate inadequate samples with under-sized speculums in parous adults — when the cervix is not fully exposed the cytology brush cannot rotate the full 360° required for an adequate transformation-zone sample. The 95 × 35 mm Graves resolves this in the patient population where the inadequate-sample rate matters most.
Side-screw control
Lateral screw locks the chosen aperture; once set the operator’s hands are free for the brush, the endocervical curette or the loop-electrosurgical-excision lead.
