Halsted-Mosquito Hemostatic Forceps

The Halsted-Mosquito hemostatic forceps is the gold-standard small vessel clamp used universally across surgical disciplines. Developed by Dr. William Stewart Halsted at Johns Hopkins, this instrument features fine, fully serrated jaws tapering to a delicate tip, enabling precise hemostasis of small vessels and tissue pedicles without excessive tissue trauma.

Instrument Design

The Halsted-Mosquito features a slim 125mm profile with horizontal serrations running the full length of the jaw. The delicate tip allows clamping of individual bleeders in superficial tissue planes. Available in straight and curved configurations — straight for surface vessels, curved for deeper tissue planes where the jaw curvature follows anatomical contours.

Clinical Applications

  • Clamping small superficial vessels during skin incision
  • Securing bleeding points in subcutaneous tissue
  • Paediatric and plastic surgery hemostasis
  • Ligature passage around small pedicles
  • Dental and oral surgical hemostasis
