What an Impression Tray Actually Does
A tray is a carrier and a former. It carries the unset material to the mouth, holds it in intimate contact with the teeth and soft tissue while it sets, and then withdraws the whole record in a single rigid piece. Three jobs, and all three depend on the tray being stiff enough not to flex under withdrawal load. A tray that springs even slightly on removal introduces distortion that the eye rarely catches until the cast is poured.
That is why material grade matters. Reusable metal trays for the clinic are typically stamped from AISI 304 austenitic stainless — it takes repeated autoclave cycles without pitting and stays dimensionally stable. Disposable trays are moulded from rigid ABS or glass-filled polypropylene, chosen for wall stiffness rather than corrosion resistance because they are used once.
The Main Categories of Dental Impression Trays
Dentate (Partial-Dentition) Trays
These have a deeper flange and a defined seat for standing teeth. They come in upper and lower forms because the arch curvature and the way the flange has to clear the tongue differ completely between jaws. Most everyday alginate and elastomer work in a partially or fully dentate mouth uses these.
Edentulous Trays
Shallower, smoother-edged, and shaped to hug a ridge rather than surround teeth. Their whole purpose is to capture the residual ridge and the underlying bony contour that a denture base will eventually rest on. Schreinemakers-pattern edentulous trays are the classic metal reference set here — flanged specifically for the atrophic maxilla and mandible, and supplied in graded upper and lower sizes.
Special and Sectional Trays
Quadrant trays record a single side; anterior trays cover the labial segment for a bridge try-in. Bite-registration trays (dual-arch) record both arches and the occlusal relationship in one pass. Custom (special) trays, built on a diagnostic cast in light-cure resin or shellac, exist for the cases where no stock tray fits — severe ridge resorption, tori, or a demanding crown-and-bridge impression that needs a uniform 2–3 mm material space.
Perforated vs Non-Perforated: The Retention Question
This is the distinction that trips up new operators. The choice is not cosmetic — it decides how the set material stays put during withdrawal.
Perforated trays carry rows of holes across the base and flanges. Material flows through, mushrooms on the outside, and locks mechanically. Because elastic materials (alginate, PVS, polyether) can tear away from a smooth wall under load, they belong in perforated trays — the perforations plus a thin coat of adhesive give belt-and-braces retention.
Non-perforated (solid) trays rely entirely on tray adhesive painted on and left to tack off. These suit the rigid, inelastic materials — impression compound and zinc-oxide eugenol paste — that would simply extrude uselessly through holes. A solid rim-lock tray is the traditional pairing for a ZOE wash over compound.

Reading the Size Markings
Most dental impression trays run on a small/medium/large scale, most commonly numbered rather than lettered. A widely used convention marks upper trays U1–U3 (or 1–3) and lower trays L1–L3, small through large, with paediatric and XL editions bracketing the range. There is no universal ISO number that guarantees one maker’s “medium” equals another’s, so verify fit in the mouth, not off the box.
A correctly sized tray gives roughly 3–4 mm of clearance around each tooth and the full arch, seats without blanching the sulcus, and lets you engage the most distal molar and the tuberosity or retromolar pad without the flange digging in. If the tray touches teeth, it is too small; if it rocks, it is too big.
A Practical Selection Sequence
Measure the widest intercanine and intermolar span with the tray held extra-orally against the arch first. Try the tray dry. Check posterior extension — the maxillary tray must cover the tuberosities and the vibrating line region for a full upper; the mandibular tray must reach behind the retromolar pads. Only then load material.
Metal or Disposable Plastic?
Reusable stainless trays give the best rigidity, take modification (you can adjust a border with wax or extend a flange), and cost less per impression over their life. The trade-off is the reprocessing burden — they must go through the full decontamination and sterilization cycle between patients.
Disposable plastic trays remove the cross-contamination question entirely and are convenient for a busy prosthodontic clinic or a mobile setup. Modern glass-filled versions are far stiffer than the flimsy trays of a decade ago, though a deep, difficult full-arch elastomer impression still argues for metal.
For clinics standardising a reusable set, matching trays to a broader sterilizable kit makes sense — the same austenitic-steel logic applies across a practice’s dental instruments, and buying trays from a manufacturer that documents its steel grade and passivation avoids the staining problems cheap trays develop after a few dozen cycles.
Loading and Handling Notes That Affect the Record
Overloading is the commonest fault. Excess alginate slumps posteriorly, triggers the gag reflex, and traps air at the sulcus. Load to just below the flange height. Seat posterior-first for the mandible and, for the maxilla, seat back-to-front so material flows forward rather than down the throat. Hold still — movement during the elastic set phase is recorded permanently.
On removal, break the peripheral seal first with a fingertip in the sulcus, then withdraw with a single firm pull along the long axis of the teeth. A slow peel invites tearing at the interproximal fins.

Do I always need adhesive if the tray is perforated?
Yes for elastomers. Perforations give mechanical grip, but polyvinyl siloxane and polyether can still peel from the tray wall under withdrawal load. A thin, fully tacked-off coat of the material-specific adhesive is standard practice even on a perforated tray.
Which tray suits an edentulous full-denture impression?

Can plastic disposable trays match metal for a crown impression?

Why is my metal tray staining after autoclaving?
Usually a steel-quality or passivation issue, or dried impression material and detergent residue baked on during sterilization. Trays made from properly passivated AISI 304 and cleaned before the cycle resist this. Brown surface staining can often be removed; pitting cannot.
