Russell A. Hibbs was an early-twentieth-century American orthopaedic surgeon who pioneered modern spinal fusion. His name attaches to the heavy bone-holding retractor and the spinal periosteal elevator used in modern open spine surgery. The Hibbs retractor is a self-retaining or hand-held instrument with broad curved blades used to expose the lamina and spinous processes during posterior spinal fusion. The Hibbs spinal elevator (chisel-like profile) is used to strip periosteum from the bone surface before fixation.
